For the fist time the University of Canterbury will be opening the doors of its mountain-top observatory to the public in a stellar overnight experience. It ll be just them, the experts and 50 million distant solar systems.
Mt John Observatory is a haven for astronomers in the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve. The six high-powered telescopes are normally only seen by researchers. Since 1965 Mt John has become a site of pilgrimage for astro-tourism. However few guests get access to New Zealand s most powerful telescopes – let alone for the whole night.

Two people - one seriously injured - were taken to hospital after a crash on the Taihape-Napier Road on Tuesday night.
A St John spokesperson said the other occupant of the vehicle suffered moderate injuries. Both occupants were taken to Hawke s Bay Hospital.
The crash, which involved one vehicle, occurred shortly after 6pm.

A heavy rain warning remains in place for Hawke s Bay until late Tuesday night, after a month without a single drop of rain in many places.
MetService meteorologist Tahlia Crabtree said the rain would hit peak rates of 10 to 20mm per hour on Monday evening.
The rain was set to ease for a time overnight on Monday, but was expected to return in significant amounts on Tuesday morning, she said.

Former Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara passed away away last night (14) while being treated for Covid-19 at IDH.
Wijesinghe Jayaweera Mudiyanselage Lokubandara, commonly known as W. J. M. Lokubandara, was the Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka from 2004 to 2010 and Governor of Sabaragamuwa Province from 2010 to 2015. He was a lawyer by profession, and was also an author of several books and a songwriter. Lokubandara held several ministries in the government of Sri Lanka before his appointment as the Speaker of the House.
On April 22, 2004, W.J.M. Lokubandara was elected after a 9-hour controversial secret ballot.
